West Virginians are Left In The Cold When it Comes to Energy Policy

West Virginia has once again topped an unfortunate list, recording the highest power outage rate in the nation following the recent winter storm. This latest reliability letdown has left thousands without electricity, highlighting the pressing need for a transformative approach to our state's energy infrastructure.

As West Virginians for Energy Freedom, we believe that the current monopoly-driven energy market has rendered us vulnerable to frequent outages, escalating rates, and a lack of resilience against natural disasters. The recent storm has exposed the fragility of our centralized power system, where reliance on a few large, out-of-state power companies has failed to meet the needs of our communities.

The aftermath of Winter Storm Blair saw approximately 8,800 Appalachian Power customers without power, with 6,450 of those in West Virginia. At the peak, over 100,500 customers were affected.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a troubling pattern that underscores the systemic issues within our energy infrastructure.

Our coalition advocates for a diversified energy landscape that empowers local ownership, promotes renewable energy, and enhances energy efficiency. By investing in locally-owned renewable energy sources, we can create a more resilient and sustainable power grid. This approach not only reduces the risk of widespread outages but also stimulates economic development and job creation within our state.

Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, offer a path to cleaner, more reliable, and affordable power. They provide communities with the autonomy to manage their energy needs and reduce dependence on external power providers. Moreover, energy efficiency measures can help us become more self-sufficient, improving the safety, comfort, and efficiency of homes, businesses, and schools across West Virginia.

The recent power outages serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for energy reform in our state. We call on policymakers, businesses, and residents to join us in advocating for energy freedom. Together, we can build a resilient energy future that ensures reliable power for all West Virginians, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.

It's time to break free from the constraints of an outdated energy system and embrace a future where West Virginians have control over their energy choices. By doing so, we can prevent the hardships caused by power outages and build a stronger, more resilient West Virginia.
